Expanding Horizons: How a Summer Trip Sparked My Journey to International Business Certification

In the summer of 2023, I started on a journey that reshaped my perspective on business. It all began with a meeting arranged by then-Kentucky Innovation Director, Monique Kenyendoll, with representatives from the Dutch government. That single meeting opened the door to my first international business trip to The Netherlands.
During the trip, I experienced firsthand how U.S. products and solutions can thrive globally. Conversations with Dutch officials and business leaders highlighted the immense opportunities in international markets. It inspired me to think beyond borders, seeing how industries like AgTech, EdTech, AI, and AR could address global challenges and create meaningful impact.
When I returned home, I was excited to start exporting my products. But, I quickly realized that exporting is far more complex and regulated than selling within the U.S. Trade laws, customs requirements, and international compliance standards create challenges that require specialized knowledge. This realization drove me to pursue my International Business Certification—a step that would equip me to navigate the global marketplace with confidence.
Why Exporting Matters
Did you know that only about 9% of U.S. businesses export, yet those exports contribute more than $2 trillion annually to the economy? These numbers reveal a massive opportunity for businesses to explore global markets, diversify revenue streams, and build resilience.
Since earning my certification, I’ve been fortunate to establish connections in countries such as Mexico, Canada, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Thailand, South Africa, Barbados, Antigua, Barbuda, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, The Netherlands, France, Spain, Italy, and Malta. Each market brings unique opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and growth.
What the World Needs
If you’re considering expanding your business globally, here are five areas where U.S. businesses can make an impact:
Agricultural Products and AgTech – From grains to precision agriculture technologies, U.S. innovations are helping to improve global food security.
Technology, AI, and AR – Industrial solutions, software, artificial intelligence, and augmented reality tools are in high demand as nations modernize.
Medical Equipment and Pharmaceuticals – Advanced healthcare innovations are transforming access to quality care worldwide.
Automotive and Aerospace Products – High-quality vehicles, aviation technologies, and components remain essential in many regions.
EdTech and Sustainable Solutions – Digital learning platforms, workforce development tools, and green technologies are driving progress and addressing critical needs.
Looking Ahead
Earning my International Business Certification wasn’t just about expanding my own business—it was about equipping myself to help others seize global opportunities. The global demand for U.S. innovation in industries like AgTech, EdTech, and emerging technologies is immense, and I want to inspire more businesses to take that leap.
Thanks to programs like the KY STEP Program and mentors like Mary NeCamp, exporting is more accessible than ever. If you’ve ever considered taking your business global, now is the time to explore the possibilities.
